An Artist's Date

Julia Cameron writes in her book An Artist's Way that every creative person should regularly book time to have a date with their inner artist. It must be something that involves the senses and feeds the artistic soul. For fibre artists, there's no better thrill than to have a chance to interact in an intimate setting with a great knitwear designer.

Stitch is thrilled to be hosting Jane Ellison at the store in Grimsby on October 20, 2008. She'll be with us for two 3 hour sessions each focusing on a different aspect of her artistry. She's also passionate about fair trade yarns and her involvement in the Mirasol project is part of this passion. Proceeds from the purchase of these yarns support the shepherds and families in Peru. It's all about everybody in the supply chain making a fair wage - a concept even more relevant given today's headlines.

From 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, we'll be learning all about making this delightful cap Wawa from Jane's newest book "Mirasol Collection #3". The yarn used is called Tupa - a sensual blend of merino and silk (50/50 blend). Jane will show us how to used slipped stitches to achieve the colour changes without the hassle of wrangling two colours.

From 2:30 - 5:30 Jane will walk us through the process of making this beautiful cabled, hooded tunic called Imay. It's made from Quina - an Alpaca and Bamboo (80/20) blend in colours straight from a painted desert landscape. We'll be learning about simple sweater alterations and how to fit to size.

Knitters should have basic skills (casting on, knitting, purling and casting off) to sign up for the workshops. Contact the store soon - there are just a few spaces left and you'll want to order your materials to have everything ready to go on the 20th.

As Jane Ellison says on the Mirasol Project website "For me I feel it is good to know that I, like many consumers, can make a difference, by choosing what I buy." This will no doubt be a very special day where we can all share in the creative process and have a chance to admire the beautiful Mirasol yarns.

Who says yarn can't change the world?
